- 15.2hh 9yo Standardbred gelding with an exceptionally kind and willing temperament. He retired from harness racing sound in 2023, and after some time off in the field he has now started his new career as a riding horse, which he has taken to like a duck to water. In the 4 months I’ve owned him we’ve mostly hacked but he’s also good to drive. He is 5-gaited (like an Icelandic) and as well as walk, trot and canter/gallop, he can also pace and tolt. These extra gaits can take some getting used to initially (hence his low price) but many people — myself included — love them. He is still quite new to being ridden so in theory needs a knowledgeable rider to bring him on, but as the quietest and most sensible horse on the yard he has already had his fair share of novices on his back, and looks after them very well. He would be ideal for any of the following scenarios: 1. teenager wanting a fun project to educate and bring on, with parents who are keen that this project is also safe, sensible and doesn’t require them to remortgage their house … 2. endurance riders who value their horses’ longevity and want a nice friend to take on adventures 3. families wanting a low maintenance spare to hack out on (which is his current job and one he does easily) 4. driving but not for a beginner please because driving is harder and more dangerous than it looks, and he’s an ex racer! He is not a show horse or ready to bring you a haul of rosettes, and nor is he a plod, but he is an extremely nice person, easy to look after and keep, with no special treatment required. Good to catch, shoe, load / travel, wash, handle, in the field or stable, and with other horses. Fabulous with children (his youngest rider was 11). Currently lives out but has also lived in - a combination of the two would suit him best. In traffic I have always found him to be good but our lanes are very quiet and he hasn’t seen much. I buy French Trotters and Standardbred pacers at the end of their racing careers and turn them into riding horses. After 20 years of racing my own Standardbreds and enjoying a range of ridden disciplines with the same horses at the same time, I have become a huge advocate for the breed. I have great contacts in racing and a lot of experience of the breed.
