Description: 16.3hh, 12-year-old gelding, ROR eligible, looking for his forever person and a knowledgeable, sympathetic home. “Donny” has been carefully retrained straight from racing over the last 5 years. He has been taken slowly and allowed to enjoy life, and he really thrives on consistent work and routine. With this, he becomes much more settled and less spooky. He is a lovely horse to have around and is very easy to do on the ground. He is good for the farrier, dentist, physio, worming, clipping, loading and travelling. He travels happily in both a trailer and lorry, with or without another horse. He is also very easy to take out on your own — I regularly take him places alone and he is straightforward to handle, tack up, load and unload. Donny hacks alone or in company and absolutely loves getting out and about to different places. He is excellent in traffic and is good around farm machinery, dogs, children and farm animals. When hacking alone, he does need a confident rider. He isn't nasty or dangerous, but can have the occasional “the grass is the wrong colour!” moment or spook at something he doesn't approve of 😂. He is generally more woah than go and you definitely have to put some leg on to get a canter! He is brilliant with gates and will stand quietly while you open and close them both mounted and from the ground. Donny has done group lessons, clinics, arena hires, hacking and fun rides and has competed in two Hunter Trials as a pair. He will happily pop around a course of show jumps at 80cm+, although he particularly enjoys rustic fences and cross-country-style jumping. He absolutely loves fun rides and is sensible in open spaces. He would also make a lovely dressage horse for someone who enjoys that side of things — he has consistently scored 70%+ and has plenty of potential to progress with the right person. He could also excel as a trekking horse, dressage horse, team-chasing horse, or simply for someone wanting a fun, versatile horse to enjoy monthly outings, fun rides and adventures with. Donny is a horse who needs to trust his person to get the very best out of him. He responds brilliantly to patience, consistency and a sympathetic approach. He can put in a buck when first coming back into work, particularly when introducing canter work. This is much less of an issue once he is in consistent ridden work. He is not nasty, does not rear or bite. He has had 4 months off at the beginning of this year while I was travelling, but has been back home since May and is now in full work, including arena hires, hacking and fun rides. Donny would suit a confident, sympathetic and patient rider who enjoys building a partnership and is looking for a horse to keep and enjoy for the long term. He would be happiest on a quieter yard and unfortunately I don't feel he would suit a busy livery environment. A knowledgeable, forever home is absolutely essential. He is not a horse I want passed around, and if I wasn't travelling again, he would not be going anywhere. Homes will be vetted and references will be required.
