- Marley is a really lovely pony, but very green for his age. We bought him for my daughter who is outgrowing her saint of a Shetland and coming off the lead rein, but he is proving just a little too forward and inexperienced for her when out at rallies/lessons, and her confidence is taking a knock, so we feel he is the wrong pony for us. While we've had him, we've mostly hacked but also taken him to pony club rallies and a week of pony club camp, where my daughter got an award for the 'most improved pony' and he really did come on a lot in those 4 days!
Out hacking and around the farm he is very chilled and hasn't put a foot wrong, he comes to call in the field and will stand for hours to be groomed, plaited etc... he loves a fuss and is very friendly. He loads and travels well in our trailer. He is up to date with his teeth and vaccinations.
In the arena and at pony club he shows his lack of experience. He can either be a little nappy, but my not very experienced or confident 10 yr old handles it ok, or he rushes, and on a few occasions he has been very 'Welshie' (our instructors description) when something has startled him (usually other horses/ponies appearing unexpectedly) and he snorts, with his head and tail up, and has spun round to face them. After a minute or 2 he calms right down, and it doesn't happen again that ride, but it has really knocked her confidence. He isn't doing it to frighten or to get her off, and she has sat it fine, but he just needs a more confident rider, as I don't think her fear is helping him. He also often canters into jumps, where my daughter would prefer to trot. He is very polite and stops when asked afterwards, but is just a little too enthusiastic for her. Otherwise, he is a super little pony who has tried his best at everything we have asked him to (xc, mounted games, show jumps). He just needs a more confident rider, and some more life experiences.
He is not a first pony, or suitable for a novice rider. He is priced to sell, and I will take a reasonable offer, as he hasn't been ridden since camp and is wasted in our field, but once he's got a more confident jockey I think he'll be worth a lot more.
