- River – 5-year-old gelding, 15.2½hh barefoot
River is a chunky, beautifully put-together type. No breeding recorded, but likely Connemara x Irish Draught. He’s a lovely stamp—would show, do dressage, or make a quality all-rounder for an experienced handler wanting a quiet, confident ride.
He needs firm boundaries on the ground. When he arrived, he had no manners, but he’s very smart and has come a long way—now leads politely, staying five steps behind. Easy in the stable, to clip, and to load. He’s been barefoot with a trimmer, so hasn’t been shod yet.
Ridden-wise, he’s totally easy. More whoa than go, but now coming nicely off the leg. Can be left for days and will pick up exactly where you left off. He’s had his first outing—never spooked or stopped. Light in the hand, starting lateral work, with canter still a work in progress but improving quickly.
Would suit an older rider who doesn’t bounce well and wants a horse that isn’t silly. Not for a novice, but suitable for a teenager moving off ponies with experienced support at home. He stands quietly, isn’t phased by much, and would do well in the show ring.
Hacking in company is established. He’s just started going out alone—happy to lead, not nappy, but still needs a bit of babysitting in heavy traffic due to local log lorries.
He’s been brought on slowly—we’ve had him since September and know all his pros and cons. Price will increase with more work.
