Description: ✨ Soby ✨ 16.2hh | Rising 7yo | Thoroughbred Gelding | ROR Eligible Soby is a 16.2hh rising 7-year-old Thoroughbred gelding who retired from racing in October 2025. He has since been given time to let down and has been slowly started in his retraining. Soby has a wonderful temperament and is a genuine pleasure to have around the yard. He is incredibly kind-natured, affectionate and people-oriented, happily following you around the field and always wanting to be involved. His ground manners are excellent and he is easy to handle in all situations — he has been led in and out of the field by a 6 year old child. He ties up quietly on the yard, enjoys grooming and fuss, and is generally very easy to do. He is a real character and a typical Thoroughbred who loves his food — carrots will quickly make you his best friend. Since retiring from racing, Soby has had consistent groundwork and has established a very good foundation. He: - Lunges well in the school - Works happily over poles and fillers - Has done plenty of in-hand work - Responds well to voice commands Under saddle, Soby is still green, as expected for a recently retired racehorse, but he is proving willing and straightforward. He walks, trots and canters and shows a naturally lovely movement. His schooling has been taken slowly, focusing on relaxation, particularly in the trot which has improved nicely. He has also walked and trotted over poles, which he enjoys. Hacking: Soby is excellent in company and has been happily hacked around open fields with others. He is currently less confident hacking alone and can become anxious, although he is never naughty or malicious. Our hacking is based on a working farm with open fields, and despite this he has proven unfazed by farm machinery and busy surroundings. We have been working on building his confidence by hacking in hand alone, which he is responding to well. Soby is a kind, genuine horse with a fantastic temperament and a very trainable attitude. With further education and mileage, he has the potential to excel in a variety of disciplines. He would particularly suit someone experienced with retraining ex-racehorses who is looking for a rewarding project. In time, he could make a smart grassroots eventer or all-rounder.
